The “Caribbeanist” Experience

Presentation CaribbeanThe “Caribbeanist Experience” Seminar organized by The International Association for Conference Interpreters (AIIC-Switzerland) at FTI-UNIGE (Faculté de Traduction et d’Interprétation – Université de Genève) in Geneva on September 14, 2019 was a great success, attracting more than 50 participants, most of them interpreters.

Thrilling presentations from Dr. Yanique Hume, Dr. Stacy Denny and Dr. Don Marshall from the University of the West Indies (UWI) – Cave Hill Campus – Barbados shed light on a large range of cultural, social and economic issues from a Caribbean perpective. Dr. Hume took the group through various religious and cultural traditions of Afro-Caribbean minorities. Dr.Denny shared with the participants the plight of the Caribbean people in the Creole v/s Standard English debate. As for Dr. Marshall, he defended the reputation of the International Financial Centres of the Caribbean. After the closure of the seminar, the group was invited to a « lime » at the residence of Barbados’ Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Chad Blackman who had also opened the meeting.

Audience at the seminarGuests were treated to rum, Bajan food and good music. Good vibe!
